A news ticker is a device used only in exceptional circumstances to highlight the latest information about a dynamic, fast-changing and critical situation.

A news ticker is deployed only on pages that are about a dynamic and critical situation (e.g. security, or public health-related), and requires frequent updates. How to build this in the Europa Web Publishing Platform (EWPP)
The news ticker is used to display short headlines and lead users to more complete content on the subject. Get the code and specifications

News ticker - Example

When to use

  • use only for exceptional and/or emergency situations that are rapidly changing and are of broad interest
  • use as headline information only where a dynamic and critical situation (e.g. security, or public health-related) requires it

When not to use

  • do not use for standard, routine news
  • the news ticker should be removed when the situation is no longer critical or when the lower frequency of news updates no longer warrants its use
  • do not use to link to campaigns or content that isn't related to the page the ticker appears on
  • do not use if your message requires lengthy copy
  • do not combine with a carousel, as they both contain moving elements that will compete for users' attention

Dos

  • place as the first element below the page header, above the page body content
  • use short and concise sentences that fit on a single line of copy when viewed on desktop
  • follow editorial guidelines for links

Don'ts

  • do not use to condense important information that should be present on the page. Users scanning the page may skip over the news ticker, so any critical information must be present in the body of the page.
