Jacques Delors realisierte seine Vision eines vereinten Europas. Er war ein glühender Verfechter der europäischen Integration nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und der Architekt der Europäischen Union, wie wir sie heute kennen. Von Januar 1985 bis Ende 1994 war Delors Präsident der Europäischen Kommission. Seine drei Amtsperioden waren durch seinen rastlosen Einsatz für Freiheit, soziale Gerechtigkeit und Solidarität gekennzeichnet – Werte, die heute in unserer Union fest verankert sind.
Jacques Delors starb am 27. Dezember 2023 im Alter von 98 Jahren.
Die Kommission nimmt Abschied von Jacques Delors
Präsidentin Ursula von der Leyen und andere hochrangige Gäste gedachten am 31. Januar 2024 dieses großen Europäers, der Europa geprägt und wesentlich zum europäischen Projekt beigetragen hat.
Jacques Delors war ein Visionär, der Europa stärker gemacht hat. Sein Wirken hatte tiefgreifenden Einfluss auf das Leben mehrerer Generationen von Europäerinnen und Europäern, auch meiner eigenen. Wir sind ihm zutiefst dankbar.
Meilensteine im Lebenswerk von Jacques Delors
Als Präsident der Europäischen Kommission brachte Jacques Delors das Projekt der Europäischen Union dank seiner Weitsicht und Hingabe erheblich voran.

- EU-Binnenmarkt
Der größte Binnenmarkt der Welt gewährleistet den freien Verkehr von Waren, Dienstleistungen, Kapital und Menschen
- Vertrag von Maastricht
Unionsbürgerschaft, gemeinsame Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik, Mitentscheidungsverfahren bei der Gesetzgebung, Schaffung der Grundlagen für den Euro und Geburt der „Europäischen Union“
- Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion
Koordinierung der Wirtschafts- und Fiskalpolitik, gemeinsame Währungspolitik und der Euro als gemeinsame Währung
- Erasmus-Programm
Jedes Jahr beteiligen sich mehr als 650 000 Studierende, Auszubildende, Schüler/innen, Freiwillige und Lehrkräfte an Studiengängen, Schulungen, Lehrtätigkeiten und Freiwilligenarbeit
