Providing efficient, safe and environmentally friendly transport
With transport contributing around 5% to EU GDP and employing more than 10 million people in Europe, the transport system is critical to European businesses and global supply chains. At the same time, transport is not without costs to our society: greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions, noise, road crashes and congestion.
In the spotlight
1 March 2023 - In 2022, more than 20,000 lives were lost on EU roads. The majority of victims were pedestrians, cyclists and people on scooters and motorbikes. The Commission wants to modernise driving license rules, with the introduction of a digital license valid throughout the EU, and to make it easier to enforce traffic rules across borders. The new rules will also help the EU achieve its Vision Zero – having no deaths on EU roads by 2050.
