Navigation lists are used to reveal the content that sits within a particular section, and let users jump down one or two levels from the current page.

The navigation list is composed of a link, followed by a brief description of the page contents and/or a list of child pages that belong under it.

How to build this in the publishing platform (EWPP):

This format should be used as your site's primary navigation style, pointing users towards your most important permanent content.

When to use

  • when you want to reveal the site's architecture, in order to help users navigate through content
  • to display the core content of the site (e.g. policies, ongoing initiatives, reports)
  • when your page content consists entirely of navigation towards content on the next levels down

When not to use

  • don't use this component when you want to link to ad hoc information (e.g. campaigns, news stories)

Dos

  • use labels that are short and distinct
  • group link lists under descriptive headings
  • include no more than nine lists under one heading. Break up link lists into more sections or pages if you would otherwise have more than nine lists under one heading.

Don'ts

  • don't display the title, or parent link, on its own in situations where the parent page has no children. Always include a description after the link.
  • don't group more than nine link lists together under one heading
