Its purpose is to assist the Member States improve the effectiveness of their national justice systems by providing objective, reliable and comparable data. Beyond the judiciary, it also includes indicators pertaining to other public authorities relevant for the functioning of the single market and for the protection of the rule of law.
Effective justice systems are essential for implementing EU law and for upholding the rule of law and the values upon which the EU is founded. They ensure that individuals and businesses can fully enjoy their rights, strengthen mutual trust, and help to build a citizen-, business- and investment-friendly environment. Effective justice systems are also essential for the sustainability of long-term growth, as well as for the functioning of the single market as a whole. Essential for protecting investments, they contribute to productivity and competitiveness. They are also important for ensuring the effective cross-border enforcement of contracts, administrative decisions and dispute resolution.
The EU Justice Scoreboard is one of the sources of information for the annual Rule of Law Report. Its findings also inform the country-specific assessments within the European Semester - the EU’s annual cycle of economic policy coordination - within the Recovery and Resilience Facility and in the context of the application of the Rule of Law Conditionality Regulation.
