Types of non-permanent staff
The European Commission often recruits non-permanent staff for fixed-term contracts.
- temporary agents perform highly specialised tasks and can be hired for a limited time
- contract agents perform manual or administrative tasks, or provide additional capacity in specialised fields when officials are not available; they are generally hired for a fixed period of time
- seconded national experts (SNEs) are civil servants in EU Member States who are recruited to share their knowledge and expertise in the Commission for a fixed period of time

There are two ways to submit a spontaneous application:
Contract Agent Selection Tool (CAST)
If you are interested in being recruited as a contract agent at the Commission or other EU institutions and bodies, you can register in the CAST database.
When a need to recruit contract agents arises, our recruiting staff search this database and shortlist a number of candidates whose profiles match the job requirements.
To register in the CAST database, you must first create an EPSO account. You can then register according to the job profile that best fits your academic and professional background.
