A carousel displays a series of banners, one at a time, allowing you to promote more than one high-priority message. Banners within a carousel follow the guidelines for the banner.

Carousels allow more than one message and Call to action (CTA) to occupy a single, high-visibility space. They are used on homepages, mostly for campaigns or initiatives. How to build this in the Europa Web Publishing Platform (EWPP)

When to use

  • use only on the homepage of your site
  • use for topical information, not for a general introduction to your site or organisation
  • deploy for a limited period and update when there is content that is more relevant

When not to use

  • do not use on internal site pages
  • avoid using a carousel to communicate critical content - this should be placed in the body of your page
  • do not use to feature content with similar themes and/or with multiple CTAs that link to the same page or group of pages
  • consider whether a carousel is the most effective approach

Dos

  • follow the banner guidelines for the banner content
  • if using images, follow the audiovisual guidelines
  • your banner images should be different from one another
  • replace the carousel with a single banner as soon as you no longer need to feature multiple messages

Don'ts

  • do not break up your message onto multiple slides
  • do not repeat the message on multiple slides
  • don’t include more than three slides in your carousel
  • don't choose images that are too complex for users to process at a glance
