Jacques Delors fogalmazta meg az egységes Európáról alkotott elképzelést. Határozottan kiállt a háború utáni európai integráció mellett, és a ma ismert Európai Unió egyik megteremtője volt. Három ciklusban, 1985 januárjától 1994 végéig töltötte be az Európai Bizottság elnöki tisztségét. Ezt az időszakot a szabadság, a társadalmi igazságosság és a szolidaritás iránti mély elkötelezettség jellemezte, ma már ezek képezik Uniónk alapját.
Jacques Delors 2023. december 27-én, 98 éves korában hunyt el.
