On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a war of aggression against Ukraine, challenging Ukrainians’ aspirations for a better future, and for getting closer to the EU. This was an attack, not just against Ukraine, but against freedom, self-determination, and democracy.
Ever since the beginning of the war, the EU has stood up for Ukraine with unwavering commitment. We have provided the country with unprecedented political, financial, military and humanitarian support and have welcomed millions of Ukrainians seeking refuge in the Member States.
The EU will continue to offer assistance to Ukraine and impose hard-hitting sanctions against Russia and those complicit in the war.

In focus
15 June 2026 – EU Member States agree to open the first negotiations cluster with Ukraine, in a historic milestone on the country’s path towards EU accession.
EU accession negotiations are organised around six thematic clusters. The ‘fundamentals’ cluster covers the core values and principles on which the EU is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions.
This achievement is testament to the progress made by Ukraine in advancing reforms, even in the face of unprecedented challenges.
