The investment is part of a broader upgrade of the section Ljubljana-Divača, the main section of the railway Ljubljana-Sežana-State Border, built between 1846 and 1857, as part of the “Southern Railway” Vienna-Trieste. The railway has remained practically the same since its construction, the only upgrade being the electrification in 1962.
The section is the main connection of the Primorska region to central Slovenia and is part of two TEN-T corridors: Mediterranean and Baltic-Adriatic.
The investment aims to eliminate bottlenecks, increase train speed, traffic safety and maximise the capacity of the tracks.
The first two parts of the upgrade - the sections Ljubljana-Brezovica and Brezovica-Borovnica, with a planned total value of EUR 167.3 million (according to the adopted budget for 2023/2024) - will be co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, with a currently planned contribution of EUR 123.4 million.
Works on the Ljubljana-Brezovica section started in September 2021 and were finalised in November 2022.
Works on the Brezovica-Borovnica section started in October 2022 and were inaugurated by the Director-General of the Recovery and Resilience Task Force, Ms Céline Gauer, and the Minister of Infrastructure Mr Bojan Kumer. Works were finalised in February 2024.
