Integration of geriatric care for the elderly - Strengthening the competence of health personnel to ensure quality of care

In order to strengthen the competences of health and social care professionals and others who come into contact with the ageing population, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) provides trainings with the aim of educating at least 600 participants.

During the project activities guidelines proposals will be developed to optimise the systemic approach of dealing with geriatric populations, competence models and, last but not least, different materials for both the lay and professional audiences. The added value of the project will be reflected in the integration of professionals involved in caring for the elderly (geriatric) population and by upgrading the competences of the secular public, health and social care workers and others coming into contact with the ageing population. 

The project will also contribute to better or more efficient care for older people in the provision of long-term care and care that enables the maintenance or improvement of the individual’s essential functions, the quality of living and the preservation of autonomy.

The project aims to achieve its objectives by:

• situation analysis to identify and geriatric assessment of multi-morbid and fragile patients;
• upgrading the competences of health and social care workers and others who come into contact with an ageing population in their work;
• developing tools and preparing the ground for establishing a comprehensive approach to dealing with geriatric populations that will allow systematic identification of the needs of older people and their optimal healthcare.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility provides funding of EUR 2.8 million, while the total investment is worth EUR 3 million. The project started in September 2022 and will be finalised by August 2026.
