Winners announced

Congratulations to the 27 winners – one from each EU country – of this year’s Juvenes Translatores translation contest for secondary schools!  Selecting the winners was no easy task, given the numerous impressive translations. Alongside the winners, 341 participants received special mentions. 

This year we had a record 3070 participants from 713 schools, who translated in 144 different language combinations out of the 552 available – a reassuring sign of steady interest in languages and multilingualism in the EU. Our contest provides an extra incentive for language learning and connects young people from across the EU in a common experience. As language teacher David Guénard (from Sartrouville, France) put it, Juvenes Translatores ‘brings this European experience into the classroom’.

Piotr Serafin, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, applauded the students. ‘Learning and practising foreign languages is key to understanding other cultures beyond our own. As we learn a new language, it helps open our minds and broaden our horizons. The world needs this understanding and sense of tolerance more than ever.’ 

We look forward to meeting the winners and their teachers at the award ceremony in Brussels on 10 April.

Background:

DG Translation has been organising the Juvenes Translatores (latin for ‘young translators’) contest every year since 2007. Its aim is to promote language learning in schools and give young people a taste of what it is like to be a translator. It is open to 17-year-old secondary school students and takes place at the same time in all selected schools across the EU. The contest has inspired and encouraged some of the participants to pursue their languages at university level and to become professional translators.
