#WaterWiseEU: A campaign to transform how we think about water in Europe

A frog pokes its head out of the water in a bubble

Europe is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world and its water systems are under increasing stress. Water scarcity affects 30% of Europeans and 20% of land each year. In fact, 70% of European citizens have expressed concern about water pollution and water scarcity, and yet almost half of them do not feel well informed about water-related problems in their country.

That is why the #WaterWiseEU campaign was recently launched, an initiative that will contribute towards a water-resilient Europe by 2050.

Our water cycle, the process by which water moves through the Earth’s land, seas and atmosphere, is disrupted and needs to be fixed. Human activity and climate change is damaging ecosystems and leading to more evaporation, more floods, more drought – and less water for us and all other life that depends on it.

The #WaterWiseEU communication campaign, which will run until the autumn, aims to raise awareness around this and to shine a spotlight on the many solutions available. Solutions such as boosting natural water storage, replenishing ground water, and rebuilding soil health, but also smart water management, water efficiency and reuse.

By working together, we can change existing perceptions of water and ‘See Water Differently’, as the official campaign slogan states.

The campaign has developed a number of assets, including ready-made visuals and messages, which it is putting at the disposal of campaign partners to use. Partners are being encouraged to use these assets to spark a conversation, organise events and align with their own communication actions.
