The EU’s package of measures to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels, is now complete.
The EU now has legally binding climate targets covering all key sectors of the economy following the adoption of its last two proposals: the revised Renewable Energy Directive and the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation.
This milestone represents an opportunity for fostering the EU’s competitiveness and resilience, and shows the EU is delivering on its promise to shape the green transition for the benefit of citizens and industries. Ahead of the upcoming COP28 UN Climate Conference, Europe hereby confirms its commitments and is well on its way to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The so-called ‘Fit-for-55’ package of legislation includes
- emissions reduction targets across a broad range of sectors
- a target to boost natural carbon sinks
- an updated emissions trading system to cap emissions, put a price on pollution and generate investments in the green transition
- social support for citizens and small businesses
- a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism to ensure imported goods pay an equivalent carbon price on targeted sectors
- updated targets on renewable energy and energy efficiency
- a commitment to phase out new polluting vehicles by 2035
- and measures to boost charging infrastructure and the use of alternative fuels in road transport, shipping and aviation
