EU energy in figures: main EU energy data in your pocket

Pocketbook 2021

The latest “EU Energy in Figures” energy statistical pocketbook (2021 version) has been published by the European Commission this week. Available online – with a printed version to be available for order soon – the pocketbook provides comparable statistics per year and per Member State for many different aspects of the energy sector. For example, this edition highlights that the EU has more than doubled in share of renewables in the decade from 2009 to 2019 – in fact it rose from 6.4% of the EU’s energy mix in 2000 to 15.8% in 2019.

As most of the figures given are the official EUROSTAT figures for 2019, this edition provides a useful indication of the situation of the EU energy sector in the last year before the pandemic (and before the launch of the European Green Deal)

The pocketbook provides energy statistics for all EU countries and the EU as a whole, covering areas including energy balances, energy production and consumption, electricity capacities, energy prices, main energy indicators, socio-economic data and the impact of the energy sector on climate. You can also find an energy profile for each EU country, as well as details of each country's progress towards the EU's 2020 climate and energy targets. Many of the cumulative figures have now been adjusted from EU-28 to EU-27 in order to have a more accurate comparison with the situation in today’s EU.
