Foreign Policy Instruments

FPI is responsible for the financial and operational components of EU foreign policy. It helps countries cope with crises and maintain peace, security, law and order. FPI also fights trade in conflict diamonds and materials linked to torture.

Responsibilities

The Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI) puts EU foreign policy into action quickly and effectively. Working closely with the European External Action Service (EEAS) and other Commission departments, FPI designs and manages projects that support the EU’s role as a global actor.

FPI contributes to peace and security, responds to international crises, and supports democracy and the rule of law around the world. FPI manages funding instruments such as the European Peace Facility and plays a key role in the EU’s public diplomacy through programmes such as the European Union Visitors Programme. FPI also implements two regulatory instruments, one to prevent trade in goods linked to torture or capital punishment, and a second to stop the trade of conflict diamonds.
