The goal of this investment is to procure two prototype battery trains to avoid costly investments in electrification of lines and maintenance of the overhead contact line.

The investment entails the procurement of two prototype trains: the Battery electric motor train (BEMV) and the Battery motor train (BMV). The development of the prototypes shall enable the organisation of passenger transport by rail on non-electrified lines using modern electrically-powered trains, reducing diesel energy costs, reducing noise and pollution impacts, protecting the environment, reducing vehicle operating costs, and improving urban and regional accessibility. The introduction of new battery passenger trains on non-electrified lines could have the potential to gradually replace 60 diesel multiple units that are over 40 years old, contributing to the reduction of harmful emissions.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility provides funding of EUR 13.3 million towards this investment.

A contract between Croatian Railway Passenger Transport Company and the contractor, KONČAR company, was signed in December 2022.
