The regional railway line No. 70 Jesenice–Sežana, known as the Bohinj Railway, was built between 1900 and 1906 as a connection between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea and is not electrified.

Within RRF, an upgrade of 12.1 km of the regional line is planned. The regional railway line is located in an area affected by natural disasters in 2023.

The investment would not only improve the region's accessibility by rail and enhance the attractiveness of public transport but also increase its resilience to potential future disasters in the region.

The works are expected to be completed by mid-2026, resulting in 12.1 km of upgraded regional railway infrastructure that meets the following requirements:

  • enhancing rail fluidity by removing bottlenecks,
  • upgrading lines in accordance with the technical specifications for interoperability,
  • ensuring a load capacity of category D4 (22.5 t/axle and 8 t/m), and
  • and tecnical parameters to increase the speed of trains to the new design speeds.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility contributes EUR 48.4 million to the investment worth EUR 93.7 million in total. The works started in 2024.
