The project concerns the renovation and modernization of the Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC), which has been operating since 1980 as part of the School of Science and Technology at the University of Crete.

The interventions are being carried out across the entire building housing the museum’s exhibition, located along the coastal zone of Heraklion, with the goal of transforming it into one of the most advanced and technologically sophisticated natural history museums in Europe.

The upgrade includes energy-saving interventions, such as thermal insulation, replacement of window frames, improved lighting systems, and innovative heating and cooling solutions using renewable energy sources.

Additionally, advanced energy monitoring and management systems (BEMS/BMS+) will be installed.

An “Energy Trail” will also be created to inform, educate, and raise public awareness—particularly among students and families—on energy and environmental issues.

At the same time, through the implementation of a museological and museographic study, the museum will gain a renewed exhibition enriched with interactive and digital media, offering a dynamic and modern learning experience for all visitors.

The new exhibition will showcase biodiversity, natural processes, and the interaction between humans and the environment, addressing major issues such as the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, with the aim of raising awareness and fostering environmental responsibility.

With a total budget of €5,444,251 the project aspires to establish the NHMC as a leading center for scientific knowledge, environmental education, and culture with international reach, while also promoting sustainability and significantly reducing the building’s environmental footprint.
