Development of Rapid Mass Transport systems (metro, streetcar, BRT) (Mission 2 – Component 2: Investment 4.2)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for the increase of rapid mass transport system ridership, favouring a modal shift from car transport to public transport.

This investment consists in:

  • The construction of new lines and extension of existing lines of rapid mass transport systems for at least 231 km. The list of projects includes at least 96 km of metro lanes or tramway, and at least 135 km of trolleybus or cableway.
  • The upgrade of the infrastructure of rapid mass transport systems, including their digitalisation. These interventions include the upgrade of metro stations and of metro track infrastructure, signalling systems for railway or tramway, public transit depots.
  • The purchase of zero-emission rolling stock for rapid mass transport systems.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 3.4 billion.

Within this investment, the project “Tram Linea Rossa” was developed as part of the Urban Plan for Sustainable Mobility in Bologna, with the objective to host 110,000 passengers per working day, representing 21% of urban movements by public transport, and shifting up to 15,000 passengers away from private transport. The tram line is 16.5 km long, includes 3 terminus and 30 stops, with a tram every 4/5 minutes.

The line will connect Borgo Panigale (west terminus, where 380 car parking spots as well as an exchange terminal for extra-urban bus lines will be created) with the university for Agriculture. An additional branch to the North will also connect the Terminal Area Fiera and the exchange car parking Michelino. The line will connect interest points such as Ducati, the railway station of Borgo Panigale, MAST, Opificio Golinelli, Ospedale Maggiore, Central Station.

The project “Tram Linea Rossa” is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan with EUR 15.1 million and will be concluded by 2026.
