A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for the Valletta Region

Soft mobility

The objective of this reform is to foster sustainable mobility in Malta through better planning and introduction of innovative mobility solutions. The reform consists of the online publication and implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the Valletta Region, home to over 40% of the total population of the Maltese Islands. The SUMP was published on the website of the Ministry of Transport on 30 December 2022. Next, sustainable mobility measures will be put in place, including (i) peripheral parking schemes encouraging more cycling and walking, (ii) local transport hubs, (iii) cycling infrastructure, (iv) car-sharing and on-demand transport services, (v) electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, and (vi) last-mile and alternative mobility solutions. The full reform is expected to be completed by 30 June 2025.
