Structural reinforcement and restoration works, seismic consolidation, and safety improvements at the primary school building in Via Manzoni 8

School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption. In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings. Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project aims to carry out structural reinforcement, seismic consolidation, and safety improvement works on the primary school building located at Via Manzoni 27.

Summary of main interventions:
- Construction of a perimeter stiffening ring beam to improve the overall structural behavior, enhance the connection between orthogonal walls, and increase the flexural resistance of walls perpendicular to seismic action.
- Painting of façades and renovation of plaster on the lower sections, including masonry restoration.
- Reconstruction of the lower parts of window frames and refurbishment of roof coverings, gutters, and downspouts.
- Restoration of existing windows and shutters.
- Inspection and maintenance of secondary structural elements, including thermographic analysis to detect potential delamination, preparation of safety measures, and localized repairs.
- Review and maintenance of the existing electrical system.
- Consolidation of staircase walls using preformed GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) composite mesh with epoxy resin, including the installation of suitable connectors and application of structural plaster followed by repainting.
- Restoration of reinforced concrete balconies and terrace fronts.
- Construction of an external steel exoskeleton along Via De Amicis and near the post office ramp, with new foundations using micropiles, demolition, and reconstruction of the ramp.
- Partial demolition of the roof slab, pillars, and cornices.
This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 945.000,00
