The investment aims to modernise the medium-voltage electricity distribution grid and enable the connection of renewable energy sources and heat pumps and charging stations for electric vehicles.

The goals is to provide at least 279 kilometres of new or reconstructed medium-voltage distribution network.

By investing in strengthening the medium-voltage electricity distribution network, the Ministry promotes the digitalisation of the national grid by capturing new control systems and sensor technologies.

The investment, which will contribute to the objectives of the European REPowerEU plan, complements that of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the construction of new transformer stations and the low-voltage grid. Both investments respond to the challenges posed by decarbonisation, distributed energy sources and electro-mobility, or the use of electricity as the main energy product in transport and heating.

On 18 October 2024, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy launched a public tender to co-finance the construction of a new or reconstruction of an existing medium-voltage distribution network for the period 2023-2026.

EUR 20 million of Recovery and Resilience Facility is earmarked for this purpose.

The investment is expected to be completed by 30 June 2026.
