Investments in projects of urban regeneration, aimed at reducing situations of marginalization and social degradation (Mission 5 – Component 2, Investment 4)Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for investments in urban regeneration, to reduce marginalization and social degradation as well as to improve the social and environmental context of urban centres. The measure aims at supporting the reuse and re-functionalization of public areas and existing public building structures for purposes of public interest, and at improving the urban landscape through renovation of public buildings, with particular attention to the development of social, cultural, educational and didactic services, including sporting activities. The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 2 billion. As part of this investment, the project includes several operations, such as vegetation clearing, the restoration of avenues, the maintenance of forestry areas, and the construction of elevated walkways to ensure access for people with mobility difficulties or strollers. Additionally, outdoor educational spaces will be created. In addition, new native trees will be planted to promote biodiversity and enhance the resilience of forests against pest infestations. The maintenance of forestry areas aims to protect valuable trees and manage weedy vegetation, through care, deep fertilisation and endotherapy. Thanks to Green Spaces, the new tool for managing the city's tree heritage, a georeferenced census has been carried out, along with approximately 5,000 VTA (tree stability assessment) tests. Additionally, the canal fed by the Acquedotto Vergine in the valley between Colle Roccolo and Colle Cavalle Madri has been restored. Originally designed as an English-style park, this area has now been cleared of the brambles that once covered it. The canal, which provides drinking water, is a strategic point for migratory birds, offering them a valuable staging area with clean water within the city.
