Plan for the extension of full-time  (Mission 4, Component 1, Investment 1.2)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for the extension of school time, in order to increase the educational offer of schools and make them open and available to the territory beyond school hours. The measure envisages the construction or renovation of canteen spaces for at least 1 000 structures to allow for the extension of school time.

Extended schooling hours are expected to have a positive impact on the fight against early school leaving.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 1 billion.

As part of this investment, the project envisages a new building to be used as a school canteen, which has a precise location within the school's current context. This building will be located in the north-east area, precisely on the free area located between building "A" (classrooms / nursery school canteen) and building "E" (gymnasium).

The new building will be positioned adjacent to the gymnasium building, and will have three free sides and one blind side. The choice of positioning was made following the surveys and measurements carried out on the site, where, in agreement with the municipal administration, it was found that the area identified for the positioning of the new building was clearly the one that offered the best feasibility compared to the other areas present.

The west side of the building faces the garden, so it was decided to have full-height openings that would put it in relation to the outside, considering the latter as a natural space for educational expansion. The architectural design approach will tend to a point of environmental balance with the context, a quest for modernity in composing materials combined with a deliberate use of technological and architectural systems aimed at high environmental comfort, based on sustainability criteria.

The architectural characteristics of the new body, together with the technological systems of the plant, must form a homogeneous and functional whole to ensure the results summarized below:

  • The environmental quality of outdoor spaces. Acoustic comfort of outdoor environments guaranteed by the characteristics of the building.
  • The quality of the indoor environment. High passive sound insulation of the building for both the hard and glazed facades; temperatures of the internal surfaces of the walls relatively high in winter and relatively low in summer obtained thanks to the high thermal insulation values that will characterize the elements of both opaque and glazed envelope; use of interior finishes with eco-friendly materials also in relation to their degree of cleanability and. maintenance.
  • Control of resource consumption. Reduction of energy demand through the use of opaque and transparent casing elements with high energy efficiency; increased efficiency of heat production systems through the use of heat pumps; increase the energy efficiency of artificial lighting systems through the use of high-efficiency light sources.
  • The reduction of emissions into the atmosphere. The use of heat pumps for the production of heat in order to avoid combustion processes with emissions into the atmosphere.
  • The use of energy from renewable energy sources. In compliance with current regulations, and as best described in the specific projects, will be installed on the roof of the canteen photovoltaic panels of sufficient size and quantity to ensure the supply of energy from RES required by law.
