Quantum Austria - Promotion of quantum sciences

Quantum Austria aims at boosting research in quantum sciences and its application in creating innovative products and services.

Funding by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (EUR 107 million) is used to set up research infrastructures (incl. e-infrastructures such as HPC) and collaborations with the aim to expand the knowledge base for the (further) development of technological concepts for quantum computing, simulation, metrology, and communication. In particular, the establishment or development of technologies for the whole area of quantum sciences are main objectives of the initiative.

The investment is also expected to strengthen cross-border cooperation and achieve or expand the alignment with relevant European initiatives and projects. On 21 June 2021, President Von der Leyen visited the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Institute of the Academy in Vienna.

Running until 2026, the first projects under Quantum Austria have been already selected. As of February 2023, 43 projects were awarded a total of some EUR 78 million in funding.
