Modernisation and renewal of railways infrastructure

RRF funds to extend Romania's high-speed rail, focusing on the Caransebeș - Timișoara - Arad section.

Upgrading the 155.6 km railway to 162 km, enhancing connectivity across Arad, Timiș, and Caraș Severin counties.

Allocated 1.2 billion EUR for the project's execution, aiming for completion by March 2026.

Implementation status: The financing contract for the modernization of Arad - Timișoara - Caransebeş was signed on 18.08.2022.The contract for the design and build of works for lots 2, 3 and 4 were signed and for lot 1 was designated the winning bid. The contract could not be signed due to the appeal made by Railworks JV. Technical project ongoing. Start of execution works will be in Q1 2024.

Information: The Recovery and Resilience Facility provides financial support to the development of high-speed railway across Romania. The investment objective of the project is the Caransebeș - Timișoara - Arad railway section, which is currently approximately 155.6 km long between the counties of Arad, Timiș and Caraș Severin, with the ends located in the municipalities of Arad, respectively Caransebeș. After the implementation of the project, the modernized railway section will run for a length of 162 km. The allocated budget from RRF is approximately 1.2 billion EUR. The execution of works is estimated to be finalized in March 2026.
