School building security and structural rehabilitation plan Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption.

In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings.

Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project consisting in fire control measures is part of this investment.

The school complex was built in the municipality of Nichelino in an area intended for school in the early eighties.

It stands on a flat, completely fenced land, where there are green spaces, paved paths for vehicular transit and an area for outdoor sports activities.

The external areas are shared with another higher education educational institution.

The entrances to the two school complexes are separate and do not interfere with each other.

The area on which the buildings stand is bounded to the north by Via XXV Aprile, which leads to the two schools, to the east and west by a private property and to the south by municipal roads.

The building in question is divided into two independent buildings: the school building and the gym, connected by a tunnel above ground.

The main building has a rectangular plan, with central distribution corridors to rooms such as classrooms, offices, laboratories and toilets, placed in a lateral position on the long sides of the building and are equipped with direct lighting and ventilation from the outside.

Access to the various floors is through three internal staircases.

The building is equipped with two external security stairs, placed at the ends of the central corridor.

Each floor has four toilet blocks, placed on the side of the stairs.

The project involves the following interventions: construction of safety sound diffusion system (EVAC - Emergency Voice and Communication); realization of smoke detection system and fire alarm, with detection of gas leaks; realization of emergency lighting system, with supply of luminaires.
