Innovation and technology of Microelectronics - New silicon carbide substrate manufacturing facility in Catania

Innovation and technology of microelectronics (Mission 1, component 2, investment 2)

Italy's Recovery and Resilience Plan supports the development of the strategic value chain of microelectronics by investing in Silicon Carbide substrates, which is a necessary input for the manufacturing of high performance power devices.

The investment is financed by the NRRP by EUR 340 million. As part of this investment, state aid in the form of a non-reimbursable contribution has been granted to STMicroelectronics S.r.l.

for the realization of a plant for the integrated production of silicon carbide substrates in Catania.

This project, receiving EUR 292.5 million from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (out of a total cost of EUR 730 million), aims to enhance the strategic microelectronics value chain by providing financial support for the development of production capacity for silicon carbide substrates to be used in the semiconductor industry.

In addition, the project will have a direct employment impact of at least 700 people.

The national regulatory basis for the grant has been approved and the European Commission has deemed the measure compatible with the internal market.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance and STM signed an agreement aimed at defining the conditions for the implementation of the measure.

STM completed the construction of the plant, which became operational in the second half of 2023.

At present, the company is implementing investments in the substrate production equipment.

The target of additional production of 374,400 6-inch silicon carbide substrates per year must be reached by the end of Q2 2026.
