Improving flood conditions in the Badaševica catchment area - Reducing flood risks and reducing the risk to other climate-related disasters

The goal of the project is to reduce the direct flood risk in areas within the City Municipality of Koper, which would protect 3,000 residents and employees on the outskirts of Šalare and Semedela from flood damage.

For this purpose, a dry reservoir will be constructed, which will absorb the peaks of the floodwaters during heavy rains and thereby reduce the peak of the flood wave, which would otherwise spill over the densely populated area. The project also includes the natural arrangement of the banks after the removal of concrete blocks and the establishment of habitats that will provide living conditions for aquatic and riparian organisms.

The project is being carried out in dialogue with the residents of Koper. With the flatter banks of the riverbed they will gain a new green urban infrastructure and with the arrangement of the old Badaševica riverbed the occasional unpleasant smell will be eliminated. With the active automatic management of the sluice gates that will be built on the reservoir, they will be able to prevent the intrusion of salt water into the valleys of Pradisjola and thus protect agricultural land from salinization and protect the nature reserve Škocijanski zatok.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility provided funding of EUR 964,000, while the total value of the investment was EUR 3.2 million. The project will be completed in the summer of 2026.
