
This investment comprises an upgrade of 13 regional airports - in Aktion, Chania, Corfu, Kavala, Kefalonia, Kos, Mytilini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini, Skiathos, Zakynthos - to address deviations and/or non-compliance under the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Certification Specifications.
It shall make these airports compliant with Regulation (EU) 2018/1139 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 4 July 2018 on common rules in the field of civil aviation and establishing a European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Based on article 34 of the Regulation, a certification is required and this will be carried out based on Regulation (EU) no. 139/2014 of the Commission of 12 February 2014 in which the requirements and administrative procedures relating to airports are defined.
The investment includes engineering, procurement and construction works for reshaping of Runway (RWY) Strips and Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) and other works required to address non-compliances that were identified and recorded in the official Flexibility Tools such as Deviation and Action Acceptance Documents (DAAD), Special Conditions (SC), Equivalent Level of Safety (ELOS) documents and Safety assessment studies issued in the framework of the Initial Certification Process, in accordance with the EASA regulations.
The investment also refers and includes land expropriations required for the project implementation, archaeological research and works and diversions of existing utility networks.
The aim is for the State to meet its obligations to adapt airports to European regulations and to stimulate regional development in the respective areas, many of which are iconic gateways for tourists and visitors.
The total investment amounts to EUR 133.9 million, with the EUR 106.5 million being contributed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Works in all airports are currently in progress.
