School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption.

In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings.

Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project is part of this investment.

The school complex in via Genè 12/14 in Turin was built by the Technical Offices of the City of Turin, based on a project from 1966.

The classrooms are a five-storey building above ground level, with respect to the façade on the via Genè side, plus a basement floor.

It is therefore distributed over six levels: basement with a lecture hall, gymnasium, storerooms, archives, toilets and technical rooms; mezzanine floor with administrative offices, teaching offices, teachers' lounge, bar and toilets; first floor with classrooms and toilets; second floor with classrooms, laboratories and toilets; third and fourth floors with classrooms, laboratories and toilets.

The gymnasium, on the other hand, is accessible from the teaching building through a connecting sleeve, and is located on the ground floor; the analysis of the building's problems made it necessary to draw up two complementary projects, which will be implemented at the same time.

The main interventions foreseen in this project are the seismic upgrading of the three building bodies, as indicated in detail in the structural annexes; the construction of the aerated crawl space on the basement floor of the classrooms body; the resurfacing of the flooring on the various floors of the classrooms body; the removal of the internal and some external fixtures interfering with the seismic upgrading works the replacement of all the doors in the gymnasium and tunnel building; the replacement of the rainwater collection line in the gymnasium and tunnel building, limited to the section interfering with the seismic upgrading works; the complete renovation of the electrical and special systems in the classrooms (including the bathrooms) and the gymnasium and tunnel building.
