School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption.

In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings.

Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project is part of this investment.

The school complex "I. Porro" consists of a complex of buildings built since the sixties at the bottom of Viale Kennedy in Pinerolo.

The first (building "A"), was built in 1967 and houses classrooms and offices, with adjoining gym, located on three floors plus a basement; it was next to the sleeve called former workshops (which now houses classrooms and laboratories) between 1972 and 1974, with 1/2 floors above ground and a basement.

The building "B", one floor above ground, was built in 1983 and houses technical laboratories.

In the nineties the so-called "extension" (building C) was added, with rooftops and classrooms and laboratories on several floors, with a large gym in the center.

The three bodies are connected by corridors on the ground and suspended.

The complex has been subjected to seismic adjustment interventions (limited to the body "A") in 2009, fire safety adjustment and made safe from the phenomenon of piercing in recent times.

The project involves the seismic adaptation of the secondary elements (infill) of the bodies "B" and "C" and the energy efficiency of the envelope of the body "A", with simultaneous remediation of asbestos-containing products.

SEISMIC ADJUSTMENT: completion of the seismic adjustment on the basis of the results of the verification of seismic vulnerability in relation to the regulatory evolution and the modification of the magnitude of the seismic actions brought by the NTC 2018.

The interventions refer to the two extensions (1983 and 1995), while the oldest building, having been the subject of seismic adjustment between 2006 and 2009, complies with the current seismic regulations.

ASBESTOS REMEDIATION: removal of facade infills consisting of prefabricated modular elements composed of glass parts that can be opened and blind parts in panels containing asbestos.

ENERGY IMPROVEMENT: passage of two energy classes, of the older building, through interventions on window frames and external infill respectively:

Replacement of the external windows of the body Older classrooms.

Replacement of the windows of the body "ex-workshops".

Replacement of the windows of the Gym and its changing rooms.

Realization of plastered mineral wool coat for the body.

Classrooms and body workshops basement floor.

Realization of sandwich panels insulated sheet for the Gym and Headboards Body "ex-workshops".

Creation of ventilated facade with brick elements with reduced thickness and insulation in glass wool for the central body "ex-workshops".

HYGIENIC-SANITARY ADJUSTMENT: completion of the hygienic-sanitary adjustment (in particular for what concerns the relationship between toilets and classrooms and the provision of changing rooms and related toilets of the "small gym" and the "ex-workshops" sleeve).
