School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption.

In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings.

Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project is part of this investment.

The 'Amaldi - Sraffa' school complex is located on a lot with access from Via Fratelli Rosselli n.35 and Strada Volvera n.44, on the western outskirts of Orbassano. It was built in 1975 and consists of five building bodies, four of which are for classrooms and offices and one for a gymnasium, with rooms for laboratories and services underneath.

The load-bearing structure in the elevation is mixed with partitions, reinforced concrete pillars and a steel frame; the roof consists of metal carpentry trusses.

The seismic vulnerability analysis showed some weaknesses, compared to recent technical construction standards, particularly in the beam-pillar nodes, on the perimeter beams and on the elements forming the metal roof truss.

The energy analysis highlighted the urgent need for energy upgrading work, due to the considerable heat dispersion of the building envelope.

The Metropolitan City of Turin therefore plans to carry out three macro-categories of intervention: structural, energy and architectural.
