Extension and related adaptation of the Beata Imelda preschool

Plan for nurseries and preschools and early childhood education and care services (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 1.1)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan includes an investment plan for the 0-6 age group, aimed at increasing the supply of childcare facilities by building, renovating and ensuring the safety of nurseries and preschools, to ensure an increase in the educational offer and the available slots for the 0-6 age group, and thus improve teaching quality. The measure is expected to encourage women’s participation in the labour market and support caregivers in reconciling family and professional life.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 3.2 billion.

The project involves the expansion of the school building with the addition of two new classrooms on the main south-facing façade, along with the upgrading of existing systems to meet current standards.

The institution will continue to operate with two sections each for the nursery and preschool. Shared spaces will remain unchanged, as the student-to-area ratio already complies with current regulations. Enrollment is expected to increase from 16 to 20 children in the nursery (two sections) and from 43 to 48 in the preschool (two sections). The number of bathrooms will remain the same, six for the nursery and six for the preschool, although sinks will be replaced and increased.

The expansion will enlarge the usable floor area of the existing section, providing two new classrooms connected to the main building and consistent with the materials and design of the existing structure.

The design strategy focuses on improving both functionality and aesthetics through:
- Maximizing the use of outdoor areas by reorganizing and upgrading them;
- Creating spaces for play and outdoor learning;
- Ensuring strong integration with the existing school complex and surroundings;
- Enhancing safety and accessibility of external spaces;
- Optimizing investment by using low-maintenance materials and construction systems;
- Improving the architectural quality of the entire complex.
- As part of the modernization, the students’ restroom facilities, accessible from the main entrance, will be upgraded to meet functional standards and accessibility requirements.
Planned works include:
- Creation of six new toilet stalls and a sink area;
- Adaptation of one restroom for people with disabilities.
- Plumbing installations will connect to existing systems and feature fixtures that meet all durability, hygiene, and safety standards. Sanitary equipment and support handles will ensure independent and safe use by children and persons with reduced mobility.
- The heating system will be upgraded with new radiators where needed, and the electrical system will be adapted to the new layout. All works will be carried out without altering the existing spatial organization, as interventions will be limited to the current restroom areas and will not affect the existing sewage connections, except for necessary discharge checks.

This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 500.000,00
