The project “Establishment of National Network of paths and hiking trails” is being implemented across Greece with the aim of creating and upgrading the existing national network of hiking and cycling routes, as well as recreational areas, within regions designated under Natura 2000.

The project includes:
•     Identification and mapping of routes suitable for hiking and cycling within Natura 2000 protected areas.
•     Creation of new trails and improvement of existing paths for hiking and cycling.
•     Integration of new and existing routes to form a coherent and interconnected national trail network.
•     Development of environmentally friendly recreational infrastructure.

The objective of the project is to develop a sustainable, integrated, and high-quality trail network that enables hikers and cyclists to experience Greece’s natural landscapes while simultaneously contributing to the conservation of the ecosystems protected under the Natura 2000 framework.

Overall, the project aims to promote ecotourism and highlight the natural beauty and biodiversity of Greece’s Natura 2000 areas.

The accompanying photos depict the hiking trail through the Larnaka Gorge in the town of Molai, within the Municipality of Monemvasia, which is being upgraded as part of this project, through interventions that are fully harmonized with the natural environment.
