Establishment of an Intelligent Transport System using Digital Twin technologies

A reform aimed at the establishment of an intelligent transport system (ITS) in urban areas and the Cyprus TEN-T network, using digital technologies is included in the Cypriot Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The objective of the measure is to enable better and more efficient monitoring of the infrastructure, to enhance it technologically and to introduce smart features to it.

The reform provides for the delivery, installation, and connection of 300 traffic sensors, connected to the National Access Point. This equipment is expected to constitute the basis of the digitalisation of the physical mobility networks in a geographical information system (GIS) database and the integration of mobility services.

As regards the purchase of the traffic sensors, the contract was signed in June 2024 and the installation of 150 sensors was completed in December 2024, whereas, the connection to the National Access Point of the traffic sensors was completed in May 2025.

Also, a contract has been signed between the government and the Centre of Excellence of the University of Cyprus in June 2022, for the preparation of electronic tools, through which, the defects reporting tool “FixCyprus platform” has already been prepared.

FixCyprus is a platform that enables citizens to report issues they encounter on Cyprus' road network directly to the relevant authorities. This initiative, aims to enhance road safety, improve infrastructure maintenance, and foster active citizen engagement in the upkeep of public spaces.
