Copyright: Government of Ireland The goal of this reform was to introduce a "Public Only" Consultant Contract. The 2023 Public Only contract is a major step towards the delivery of a key policy commitment in the Sláintecare report, which describes the phased removal of private practice in public hospitals. The contract was implemented on the 8th of March 2023. It is the only contract now available for new or replacement posts in the Health Service Executive (HSE) and is also available to all existing consultants giving them the opportunity to switch permanently to the new Consultant Contract.
