School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption. In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings. Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project Enhancing the branch of the high-school building “Istituto superiore Tommaso D’Oria” in the municipality of Cirié is part of this investment.

The school building was built in the late 1970s, and originally consisted in the above-ground part of the classroom building. In the early 1980s the auditorium block was built, with offices and locker rooms; the gymnasium, on the other hand, was built in the 1990s, with a single volume above ground.

The type of construction is with reinforced concrete structure, with the use of CAP (pre-stressed concrete) structural elements for the horizons, while the exterior walls are made of reinforced concrete.

The project includes the following interventions:

  • smoke detection and fire alarm system, with dismantling of the existing and reconstruction of power lines, switchboards, fire alarm control panel, smoke detectors;
  • emergency lighting system, with the supply of part of fixtures to replace the obsolete ones.

It is also planned to build a lighting system with:

  • the replacement of circuit breakers;
  • the improvement of load distribution and possible replacement of switchboards;
  • the improvement of visual comfort in work and study areas;
  • the replacement of all indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures;
  • the implementation of the new lighting system in the gymnasium.

The Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan funds this project with EUR 100.000.
