Copyright: Città metropolitana di Torino Protection and enhancement of urban and peri-urban forests (Mission 2 – Component 4 - Investment 3.1)Italy's Recovery and Resilience Plan provides the measure to protect green areas and increase their number with the objective of both preserving and enhancing biodiversity and increasing the quality of life of the inhabitants of those areas.The actions shall concentrate on the 14 metropolitan cities of Italy, which are the most exposed to environmental problems like air pollution, loss of biodiversity or to the effects of climate change.Forest reproductive material (seeds or plants) shall be planted for those areas for at least 4 500 000 trees and shrubs (in 4 500 hectares) and at least 3.5 million trees shall be transplanted in their final destination.The interventions shall follow the adoption of an urban forestation plan with the objectives of preserving and enhancing biodiversity in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy, reducing air pollution in metropolitan areas, bringing the number air quality infringement procedures down.The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 210 million.This project is part of this investment.The Metropolitan City of Turin has been awarded a grant* of € 2,257,497.00 for forestation works in the peripheral floodplain area of the river Po - Turin section, on a total area of 54.27 hectares that include non-contiguous areas in the municipalities of Brusasco, Cavagnolo, Lauriano, San Sebastiano da Po and Verolengo.These are areas that share the same vegetation and ecosystem context; the planned interventions are aimed at: eradicating invasive allochthonous species; preparing the soil for the new planting; planting native tree and shrub species that are biogeographically and ecologically consistent with the site; care and maintenance of the plant for the following five years.The intention is to upgrade the peri-river area through the planting of species pertaining to natural vegetation to increase the ecological functionality of the floodplain environment.The planting of 72,000 specimens of trees and shrubs typical of the river environment is planned, as well as their care and maintenance for the next 5 years, during which rescue irrigation, replacement of failures and combating weed and invasive species will be carried out, in order to encourage the establishment of a climatic woodland formation.*by decree of the MiTe Natural Heritage and Sea Directorate General no. 198 of 19/08/2022Top 100 recipients:CITTÀ METROPOLITANA DI TORINO Copyright: Città metropolitana di Torino ReferenceM2C4Project locations Italy EU contribution€210 000 000
