Protection and enhancement of urban and peri-urban forests (Mission 2 – Component 4 - Investment 3.1)

Italy's Recovery and Resilience Plan provides the measure to protect green areas and increase their number with the objective of both preserving and enhancing biodiversity and increasing the quality of life of the inhabitants of those areas.

The actions shall concentrate on the 14 metropolitan cities of Italy, which are the most exposed to environmental problems like air pollution, loss of biodiversity or to the effects of climate change.

Forest reproductive material (seeds or plants) shall be planted for those areas for at least 4 500 000 trees and shrubs (in 4 500 hectares) and at least 3.5 million trees shall be transplanted in their final destination.

The interventions shall follow the adoption of an urban forestation plan with the objectives of preserving and enhancing biodiversity in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy, reducing air pollution in metropolitan areas, bringing the number air quality infringement procedures down.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 210 million.

This project is part of this investment.

The Metropolitan City of Turin was the beneficiary of a grant* amounting to € 3,013,010.00 for the recovery of two natural areas in the lower Susa Valley that had been damaged by forest fires in the previous five years: one in the Mompantero area just over 64 hectares, the other smaller one of almost 6 hectares in Caselette, for an overall total of approximately 70 hectares to be reforested.

In these areas, some of which have already been affected by silvicultural works to make them safe and remove dead plants, active reconstitution interventions have been planned through the planting and/or possible seeding of forestry planting stock, suitable for the station, in an attempt to recover the naturalness, biodiversity and continuity of the tree cover, improving the functionality of forest ecosystems damaged by fire and reducing hydrogeological risks.

The project intervention envisages - after the land preparation work has been carried out - the supply and planting of, approximately 88,000 spontaneous native trees and shrubs of the sub-mountain habitat and their care and maintenance for the following 5 years.

The objective of the Metropolitan City of Turin is to have at least 1,000 plants per hectare of intervention in the 5 years following planting.
