Mission 2 – Component 4 - Investment 3.1: Protection and enhancement of urban and peri-urban forestsThis measure aims to protect green areas and increase their number with the objective of both preserving and enhancing biodiversity and increasing the quality of life of the inhabitants of those areas. The actions shall concentrate on the 14 metropolitan cities of Italy, which are the most exposed to environmental problems like air pollution, loss of biodiversity or to the effects of climate change.Forest reproductive material (seeds or plants) shall be planted for those areas for at least 4 500 000 trees and shrubs (in 4 500 hectares) and at least 3.5 million trees shall be transplanted in their final destination. The interventions shall follow the adoption of an urban forestation plan with the objectives of preserving and enhancing biodiversity in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy, reducing air pollution in metropolitan areas, bringing the number air quality infringement procedures down. The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 210 million. This project of ecological rehabilitation is part of this investment. The plan previews participations of forestation in the perifluvial band of the river Po, in the within of the Protected Area of the Piemontese Po and in the contiguous area of the band of the Po - Turin stretch, on a total surface of approximately 160 hectares, involving non-contiguous areas in the municipalities of Chivasso, San Sebastiano Po, Lauriano, Monteu da Po, Cavagnolo and Verrua Savoia, owned by the State Water Regional.Although not contiguous, the areas fit into the same vegetational and ecosystem context of the Po Park and have similar characteristics, therefore the planned interventions are to be considered complementary to each other and competing with the same objectives. The overall objective of the project is to consolidate the role of core area of the Ecological Network carried out by the areas located immediately close to protected areas of high ecological value. The specific objectives of the project are linked to the protection of biodiversity with a view to the redevelopment of the perifluvial environment in which the planting of species of natural vegetation potential aims to increase: the ecological functions of the floodplain; its role as a territorial scale green and blue infrastructure; landscape quality and in general the provision of regulatory ecosystem services. This will therefore also benefit neighbouring forest formations, as the proximity of invasive alien species will be replaced by native plants and Over time, dynamics can be established that encourage specific and structural diversification.Top 100 recipients:CITTÀ METROPOLITANA DI TORINO ReferenceM2C4Project locations Italy EU contribution€210 000 000
