Caput Mundi: Restoration of Piazza del Campidoglio paving and elevations

Caput Mundi Next Generation EU for touristic great events (Mission 1, Component 3, Investment 4.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan increases the number of accessible tourist sites in Rome, creating valid and qualified tourist and cultural alternatives with respect to the crowded central areas, as well as increasing the use of digital technologies, enhance green areas and the sustainability of tourism. The investment envisages six lines of interventions:
1. “Roman Cultural Heritage for EU-Next Generation”, covering the regeneration and restoration of cultural and urban heritage and complexes of high historical-architectural value of the city of Rome;
2. “Jubilee paths” (from pagan to Christian Rome), targeted to the enhancement, safety, anti-seismic consolidation, restoration of places and buildings of historical interest and archaeological pathways;
3. #LaCittàCondivisa, covering the redevelopment of sites in peripheral areas;
4. #Mitingodiverde, covering interventions on parks, historical gardens, villas and fountains;
5. #Roma 4.0, covering the digitalization of cultural services and the development of apps for tourists;
6. #Amanotesa, aimed at increasing the supply of cultural offer to peripheries for social integration.

The investment is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility by EUR 500 million and includes this project.
The project focuses on comprehensively restoring and maintaining Rome's three Capitoline buildings and Piazza del Campidoglio, with a strong emphasis on Michelangelo's original design elements. This includes restoring facades and the Piazza's paving, plus waterproofing roofs and upgrading rainwater systems. Essential work also covers structural consolidation, restoring architectural decorations, and modernizing public lighting with new LEDs. Furthermore, original windows and shutters will be restored using energy-efficient solutions. This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 3510000. The project includes the following activities for the restoration and maintenance of the three Capitoline buildings and Piazza del Campidoglio: restoration and maintenance of the façades of the three Capitoline buildings, focusing on the Michelangelo part; restoration and maintenance of the paving of Piazza del Campidoglio; waterproofing (partial or total) of the roof pitches of the three Capitoline buildings, which converge on the square; maintenance and adaptation of the rainwater collection and flow system of the three Capitoline buildings; installation of a new system for collecting and distributing rainwater coming from the three buildings and from Piazza del Campidoglio; removal of the old electrical network and replacement with a new network for monumental public lighting; replacement of old lighting fixtures with new latest generation LED fixtures for the Capitoline buildings; structural consolidation of the three Capitoline buildings; restoration of the architectural decorations and sculptural elements present on the façades of the three buildings; restoration of the original windows and shutters of the three buildings, using traditional materials and modern technical solutions to ensure energy efficiency.
