Building replacement of the “Sec. I – Falerna M.” school through demolition and reconstruction

Construction of New Schools through Building Replacement (Mission 2, Component 3, Investment 1.1)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for the progressive replacement of part of the building stock of public schools with the aim of creating modern and sustainable structures. The objectives of the interventions are the reduction of energy consumption, an increased seismic safety of buildings, and the development of green areas. The plan is expected to target 166 school buildings, with a total of 400 thousand m².

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 1 billion.

This project is part of this investment part. The design is guided by the principles of sustainable architecture, bio-ecological structures, the use of natural materials, and clean energy. The main architectural concepts that inspired the design and compositional choices are:
- Landscape integration: minimal environmental impact;
- Orientation of classrooms: maximum natural lighting and solar gain;
- Genius loci and context: strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The school building is no longer conceived as an isolated container where activities take place solely within enclosed classrooms, but rather as an integral part of the city — a place of interaction that is open and responsive to its surroundings. This innovative approach is fully reflected in the design and spatial composition of the building, which has been developed to allow for the modular organization and aggregation of spaces and volumes, in compliance not only with architectural and compositional principles but also with current legislation.

The design also takes into account accessibility standards to remove architectural barriers and all safety regulations related to fire prevention in educational buildings. The outdoor green spaces surrounding the school are of particular importance, as they play a key role in environmental and educational quality. This project is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility with EUR 2.434.330,47  and it is currently being implemented.
