Borgomasino, Caravino, Ivrea, Montalto dora, Pavone c.se, Strambino, Vestignè, Vische –rehabilitation of ecological corridors of torrente chiusella and fiume dora baltea

Mission 2 – Component 4 - Investment 3.1: Protection and enhancement of urban and peri-urban forests

This measure aims to protect green areas and increase their number with the objective of both preserving and enhancing biodiversity and increasing the quality of life of the inhabitants of those areas.

The actions shall concentrate on the 14 metropolitan cities of Italy, which are the most exposed to environmental problems like air pollution, loss of biodiversity or to the effects of climate change.

Forest reproductive material (seeds or plants) shall be planted for those areas for at least 4 500 000 trees and shrubs (in 4 500 hectares) and at least 3.5 million trees shall be transplanted in their final destination.

The interventions shall follow the adoption of an urban forestation plan with the objectives of preserving and enhancing biodiversity in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy, reducing air pollution in metropolitan areas, bringing the number air quality infringement procedures down.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 210 million.

This project of ecological rehabilitation is part of this investment.

The areas subject to intervention, owned by the regional state water and for small portions of the municipalities of Montalto Dora and Pavone C.se, are located in the Piedmont floodplain, within the Amphitheater Morainic Ivrea, along the river shaft of Dora Baltea and Chiusella Creek.

The environments present within the scope are subjected to more or less frequent disturbances, both anthropic and natural.

These conditions have led to the spread of ruderal plant formations with frequent settlement of invasive alien species.

The overall objective of the project is to improve and implement an important corridor within the Provincial Ecological Network.

The specific objectives are therefore linked to the protection of biodiversity with a view to the redevelopment of the perifluvial environment in which the planting of species of natural vegetation potential aims to increase: the ecological functionality of the floodplain; landscape quality and in general the provision of regulatory ecosystem services.

It should also be noted that the areas covered by the intervention are currently uncultivated and subject to more or less intense invasions of alien species.

The planned measures will therefore also benefit neighbouring forest formations, with the replacement of invasive alien species by native plants with the aim of establishing, over time, dynamics that encourage diversification.

Overall, biodiversity benefits will be achieved through the enhancement of forest areas and associated habitats.
