Mission 2 – Component 4 - Investment 3.1: Protection and enhancement of urban and peri-urban forests

This measure aims to protect green areas and increase their number with the objective of both preserving and enhancing biodiversity and increasing the quality of life of the inhabitants of those areas.

The actions shall concentrate on the 14 metropolitan cities of Italy, which are the most exposed to environmental problems like air pollution, loss of biodiversity or to the effects of climate change.

Forest reproductive material (seeds or plants) shall be planted for those areas for at least 4 500 000 trees and shrubs (in 4 500 hectares) and at least 3.5 million trees shall be transplanted in their final destination.

The interventions shall follow the adoption of an urban forestation plan with the objectives of preserving and enhancing biodiversity in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy, reducing air pollution in metropolitan areas, bringing the number air quality infringement procedures down.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 210 million.

As part of this investment, the project is part of a total redevelopment of the perifluvial area of the Stura di Lanzo north of Turin and provides for forestation of the contiguous area of the Po - stretch of Turin, and a total area of about 105 hectares, through the renaturalization and reforestation of periurban areas to improve the ecological network of connection of the Stura di Lanzo.

The general objective is to consolidate the role of the core area of the Ecological Network played by the surrounding areas to those protected and of high ecological value, recognized by planning tools (Po Park).

With a view to the redevelopment of the perifluvial environment, the planting of species of natural vegetation potential aims to increase: the ecological functionality of the floodplain; its role as a green and blue infrastructure on a territorial scale; landscape quality and in general the provision of regulatory ecosystem services.

Overall, benefits in terms of biodiversity characterizing the Po Park and neighboring areas that also affect the lower course of the Stura di Lanzo, thanks to the enhancement of forest areas and associated habitats.

In the Chico Mendes Park and in the areas around Villaretto the wooded areas will also take on a landscape and recreational role due to the presence of public park areas or rural routes enjoyed by residents.
