Working on a clean transition with EU industry and social partners

The Commission has presented a number of building blocks to help transform Europe into a clean, resource-efficient, fair and competitive economy. They have been identified during the ‘Clean Transition Dialogues’ which the Commission organises with industry and social partners to discuss how to make the European Green Deal a reality.

Most of the concrete initiatives coming out of the European Green Deal are now firmly embedded in EU law. The focus has now turned to implementation where the input from industry and social partners is crucial to make this a success. Their feedback has highlighted a need for

  • stable, simplified and predictable rules for businesses. The Commission will provide further guidance to support industry and EU countries to implement these rules.
  • abundant and affordable clean energy, by making full use of the updated EU laws
  • building modern infrastructure as a backbone for EU industry
  • easier access to finance, since significant investments have to be made upfront to develop the necessary infrastructure. We urgently need to coordinate funding at EU level more.
  • leveraging the Single Market in a competitive global context, through joint and combined purchases for instance of critical raw materials

EU leaders will consider the next steps in Europe's clean transition at the European Council on 17-18 April.

President von der Leyen announced the start of the Clean Transition Dialogues in her 2023 State of the Union speech. The nine dialogues, chaired by Executive Vice-President Šefčovič, so far focused on hydrogen, energy-intensive industries, clean tech, energy infrastructure, critical raw materials, forest-based bioeconomy, cities, clean mobility, steel and the construction sector. More dialogues will take place soon. The Commission remains committed to fully implementing the European Green Deal in cooperation with industry, social partners, the Parliament and the Council.
