Together with Member States, the Commission will carry out risk assessments on four critical technology areas for the EU’s economic security by the end of 2023.
These will cover
- advanced semiconductors
- artificial intelligence
- quantum and
- biotechnologies
The Commission picked these four areas as the most high-risk in terms of technology security and leakage from a list of ten critical technology areas.
This exercise is part of the June 2023 European Economic Security Strategy. Against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the rise in geopolitical tensions and deep technological shifts, the EU wants to be better equipped to commonly identify and assess the risks to economic security, use the available tools and develop new ones where needed.
