Commission welcomes progress by Council on European Green Deal dossiers

Commissioner Simson energy council meeting June 2021

The Commission has welcomed the progress made by EU Energy Ministers at the 11 June Transport, Telecommunications and Energy (TTE) Council meeting in Luxembourg.

Ministers agreed on a general approach on the Commission’s proposals to revise the Regulation on the Trans-European Energy Network (TEN-E), which is an important step in the legislative process. Once the European Parliament has finalised its position on the proposals, likely in early autumn, the 3 EU institutions can move to trilogues with a view to finalising the new regulation.

Ministers also agreed conclusions on the renovation wave strategy and held a discussion on the hydrogen strategy– 2 of the European Green Deal initiatives published last year.

Speaking after the Council, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said:

The TEN-E proposal that the Commission put forward half a year ago was clear on fossil fuels: oil and natural gas projects would no longer be supported under TEN-E. With a general approach the process can now continue, and we have a hope to conclude by the end of the 2021 under the Slovenian Presidency.
