Whole-day seminar on the role that language services and automated translation and speech recognition/generation

This TEW is a whole-day seminar of presentations and discussions on the role that language services and automated translation and speech recognition/generation can play in improving the accessibility of (multilingual) public services. 

Topics will include:

  • Data and AI: Niko Papula, The Fiskmö Project (Helsinki University project developing a free NMT service (FI-SV-FI) for Finnish public administrations and gathering language resources for that purpose (FI-SV-FI) (tbc) 
  • Company/organisation dealing with multilingual accessibility (using automated translation), Lingsoft Ltd. (tbc) 
  • Speech: Company/organisation dealing with multilingual accessibility (using speech recognition/generation, interpretation tech)
  • Tentative: The Accessibility Directive, digital services and automated translation Jörgen Gren, Director, Resources, DGT (tbc) 

Background:The EU Accessibility Directive enters into force on 23 September 2020. It sets out accessibility requirements especially for public services. Linguistic accessibility forms an important part of overall accessibility. How could it be supported with digital and/or automated technical language solutions? The seminar tries to provide ideas and food for thought on this theme.
